Elmina (C/R), July 11, GNA – MTN Ghana has presented a cheque for GH¢20,000, drinks hamper and GH¢1,000 worth of airtime to the Edina Traditional Council in support of this year’s Bakatue Festival.

The donation forms part of the company’s annual contribution to the festival, which celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the people of Edina and attracts thousands of visitors and tourists to the ancient city.

This year’s festival is on the theme: “Homecoming for unity, heritage and development.”

Presenting the items at a brief ceremony at the Anomansa Palace, Mr Prince Owusu Nyarko, Senior Manager for Western and Central Regions, MTN, assured that the company remained committed to supporting festivals in Ghana as they promoted unity, preserved culture and drove community development.

“As we usually do, MTN is an African company, and we know what a festival brings to the community. It brings about development, it brings about unity and creates many economic opportunities,” he stressed.

Mr Nyarko explained that the support also formed part of activities marking MTN Ghana’s 30th anniversary, during which the company was rolling out several customer appreciation initiatives.

He said MTN had set up promotional stands at the festival grounds and was welcoming customers to Elmina with free data offers delivered through text messages upon their arrival.

“We are here because of our customers and the strong relationship we have with the Edina Traditional Council and the people of Edina. They have always supported us, and we will continue to support them,” he said.

Mr Nyarko reiterated MTN’s commitment to delighting its customers through innovative products and services while maintaining its partnership with communities across the country.

Receiving the donation, Nana Kwamina Nguando IV, Chief of Simiw and Adontenhen of Edina Traditional Area, on behalf of Nana Conduah, expressed appreciation to MTN Ghana for its continuous support for the Bakatue Festival and the long-standing partnership with the people of Edina.

He said the donation would contribute significantly to the successful organisation of this year’s festival, citing the high cost involved in organising the festival every year.

While appreciating the gesture, Nana Nguando appealed to MTN for support to construct an ultramodern library and an electronic museum in Elmina to enhance education and tourism.

He observed with concern that the entire Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem had only one library, a situation he said did not auger well for education in the area.

He expressed the readiness of the traditional council to set the projects in motion, indicating that they had lots of lands readily available.

The festival will be climaxed on Saturday with a grand durbar at the forecourt of the Elmina Castle.
