Hostage-taking at German bank leaves one person critically injured

Munich, July 23, (dpa/GNA) – One person has been critically injured in a hostage-taking incident, involving a suspect armed with a knife at a bank branch in the German city of Regensburg, a police spokeswoman told dpa on Thursday.

It was initially unclear whether the critically injured victim was still being held by the hostage-taker, whom authorities believe is a man.

Emergency services had established eye contact with the victim. The spokeswoman said police assume that other people are still inside the bank. She said emergency services are not yet inside the building, though a large contingent, including special forces and a helicopter, has been mobilized.

The hostage-taker’s motive remains unclear. The spokeswoman said no demands have yet been made.
