Prague, July 23 (dpa/GNA) – An army helicopter carrying five soldiers, crashed in the Czech Republic on Thursday.
One of the occupants was killed in the accident, the CTK news agency reported, citing the emergency services on the ground. The injured were taken to hospital.
The accident occurred at the military airfield in Náměšť nad Oslavou, the army posted on X. The airfield serves as the main operational base for the Czech military’s helicopters, and is located just under 160 kilometres south-east of Prague. No details were initially given regarding the cause of the accident.
The helicopter that crashed was a UH-1Y Venom, a modern variant of the legendary Huey series produced by the US manufacturer Bell Textron. Helicopters of this type entered service in the Czech Republic in July 2023. They replaced obsolete Soviet-built Mi-35 combat and transport helicopters, which were subsequently transferred to Ukraine.
The Czech Republic has been a member of the NATO defence alliance since 1999.
