Government begins distribution of relief items to victims of June 29 flood disaster

Accra, July 03, GNA – The Government has begun the distribution of relief items to victims of the June 29 flood daster, Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesman has said  

He said on Wednesday, 1st July, emergency relief items were successfully dispatched and issued to the following municipal areas in the capital: La Dade Kotopon Municipality, Ayawaso Central and Korley Klottey Municipality. 

Speaking at a press conference, the Minister said on Thursday, 2nd July, a second major wave of relief distributions were rolled out to the seven critical districts: Krowor Municipality, Ga East (Dome Kwabena), Shai Osuduku, Ada East, Ablekuma North, Ada West and Okaikwei North.  

“To our brothers and sisters in the Central, Volta, Western, Ashanti, Western North, and Eastern Regions: please be assured that you have not been forgotten.” 

Mr Ofosu said the impact of the floods spans seven regions, with the Greater Accra, Volta and Central Regions being the hardest hit. 

He assured the public that the government’s response had been swift, coordinated, and continuous.  

He said under the direct instruction of the President, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), through the Relief and Donations Committee, has commenced the aggressive mobilisation and distribution of essential relief items, including food, clean drinking water, temporary shelter materials, blankets, and medical supplies. 

Mr Ofosu said to ensure orderly and rapid deployment, the distribution to the affected districts was being executed in structured phases.  

He said even as we focus on the high-density displacements in Greater Accra, logistics columns are currently being organised to dispatch massive relief packages to the Central Region, Volta Region and all other affected districts across the country.  

Mr Ofosu said NADMO regional coordinators were on the ground, and additional supplies would arrive in their communities starting tomorrow. 

“As we navigate the aftermath of this disaster, we urge all citizens to remain vigilant: Adhere to Safety Warnings and Report Emergencies,” he said. 

The Minister said the government would not rest until every displaced family was safely housed, every affected district is restored, and our communities are rebuilt to be stronger and more resilient against future weather anomalies. 

He thanked the nation’s emergency service workers, the military, the police, health workers, and volunteer groups who had worked tirelessly around the clock.  

He reiterated that they would keep the public updated with briefings as the situation develops.
