Accra, Aug. 25, GNA – Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has referred President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of three persons for appointment to the Supreme Court to the Appointments Committee for consideration.
The nominees are two Justices of the Court of Appeal, Justice Sophia Bernasko-Essah and Justice Amoako Asante, and Mr Tony Forson, a former President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).
The Speaker formally communicated the nominations to the House during an emergency Sitting on Monday, August 24, after reading a letter from the President on the matter.
According to President Mahama, the nominees are being proposed to fill existing vacancies on the Supreme Court.
Referring the nominees, Speaker Bagbin directed the Appointments Committee to consider the nominations and report to the House within the period covered by the notice of recall.
“Honourable members, I accordingly refer these nominees to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report to the House within the period prescribed by the notice of recall,” he said.
He indicated that motions on the nominations must be considered within the one-week period of the urgent sitting.
The referral forms part of urgent parliamentary business for which President Mahama requested the recall of Parliament.
The House is expected to scrutinise the qualifications, competence, and suitability of the nominees before the Committee submits its report to the plenary for approval.
The emergency sitting, which commenced on Monday, August 24, will run until Friday, August 28.
