Accra, Aug. 25, GNA – Mr Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has filed a defamation suit against Mr Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), over statements he describes as false and defamatory.
He made the announcement of the legal action on the Floor of Parliament on Monday.
Parliament reconvened on Monday, August 24, 2026, for an emergency Sitting following the request of President John Dramani Mahama.
There has been a public misunderstanding between Mr Afenyo-Markin, also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu, and Mr Gyamfi over the scrutiny of GoldBod’s operations and alleged reported losses under the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG’s) Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).
The misunderstanding escalated after Mr Gyamfi described Mr Afenyo-Markin as an alleged “extortionist” in response to the Minority Leader’s criticism and demands for accountability over a reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the Bank of Ghana in 2025 under the gold purchase program.
Announcing the suit on the Floor of Parliament, Mr Afenyo-Markin said, “He has initiated legal proceedings against Mr Gyamfi and media organisations that published the statements.”
“Mr. Speaker, I have accordingly caused writs to be filed in Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited at the Accra High Court, and Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM at the Achimota Circuit Court,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the courts would determine the matter on its merits.
“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he added.
The legal action follows weeks of public exchanges between the Minority Leader and the GoldBod CEO over the financial performance of the DGPP and the extent to which the program contributed to the reported losses.
While Mr Afenyo-Markin has demanded explanations from the government and GoldBod regarding the reported losses, Mr Gyamfi has rejected allegations that GoldBod itself incurred the losses and has maintained that the claims he made would be defended in court.
