German woman dies in paragliding accident in Austrian Alps

Vienna, July 12 (dpa/GNA) – A German woman has died in a paragliding accident in the Austrian Alps, police said on Saturday.

The 28-year-old crashed into a forest near Neustift im Stubaital on Friday and struck a tree, sustaining fatal injuries. A man who was walking in the woods spotted the unconscious woman hanging in a tree canopy at a height of around 40 metres, and alerted the emergency services, a police spokeswoman confirmed to dpa.

It was initially unclear why the woman crashed. Another German paraglider was injured on Friday in the Tyrol state. According to the police, his paraglider collapsed for unknown reasons, and the man fell from a height of around 25 metres into Lake Achensee.

Two boaters witnessed the 24-year-old’s accident, rescued the paraglider and brought him to shore. The man was then flown by helicopter to a hospital.
