Washington, Sept 7. (dpa/GNA) – Five people have been killed, after an Amazon cargo plane crashed at a Miami airport on Sunday, US officials said.
Five others had been injured and hospitalized, Miami-Dade County authorities said at a press conference.
The plane overran the runway after landing at Miami International Airport from Puerto Rico, the US Federal Aviation Administration said.
Amazon spokeswoman Kelly Nantel, said the company was heartbroken by the deaths. “Our deepest sympathies go out to the families, loved ones, and all those affected by this devastating loss.”
The plane, which was operated by 21 Air, was attempting to land when the incident occurred, she said. “We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to learn more and will cooperate fully with any investigation.”
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said, more than 60 units attended the incident, which happened at about 2 pm (1800 GMT). “Units arrived to find an airplane that had caught fire as a result of this crash, with heavy flames and smoke showing,” it said on a post on X.
The plane had also struck several vehicles, it added. The National Transportation Safety Board said it would send a team to Miami to investigate the accident.
