Nairobi, Sept 7. (dpa/GNA) – Twenty-five passengers, most of them children and teenagers, have been killed in a bus accident on the island of Fogo in the island nation of Cape Verde, local media reported on Sunday.
Many others were reported to have been injured. The bus, carrying children and teenagers on a school outing, left the road in the north of the island late on Saturday afternoon, and plunged down a steep cliff about 30 metres. The cause of the accident remains unknown. The bus driver was also among those killed, according to the reports.
Rescue operations were reported to be difficult because of the remote and inaccessible location. The bus crashed onto rocky ground, and the accident site could not be reached directly by vehicles.
Given the large number of injured, the death toll could rise further. Cape Verde is an island group in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa.
