Bridge reconstruction to begin at Dzolokpuita–Akome next week – Bedzrah

By Frank Kwame Abbor, GNA

Dzolokpuita (V/R), July 06, GNA – Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, the Member of Parliament of Ho West, has announced that reconstruction of the collapsed Dzolokpuita–Akome Bridge will begin next week following the arrival of steel components at the project site.

The MP said the bridge, which collapsed several months ago and disrupted movement between the two communities, would be replaced with a complete steel structure to restore safe access for motorists and residents.

“We know the people have suffered since the bridge was damaged. The authorities have released the steel structures for the project, and part of the materials has already arrived. Construction and erection of the steel bridge will begin early next week,” Mr Bedzrah said.

He expressed appreciation to the Minister for Roads and Highways, Mr Kwame Governs Agbodza, and the Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu, for their swift response to requests to restore the vital transport link.

He added that the project would not only replace the damaged bridge but also improve sections of the adjoining road network.

The MP said residents and motorists should expect temporary disruptions during construction, explaining that the existing crossing would be completely closed to allow contractors to undertake the work safely.

“The road will be closed completely because the old structure has to be removed before the steel bridge is erected. We appeal to the public to exercise patience and use alternative routes while the work progresses,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Albert Tomi, a citizen advocate, welcomed the delivery of construction materials.

He however called for greater transparency regarding the project. He said a member of his monitoring team had independently verified that steel components had indeed been delivered on the site.

Mr Tomi urged the authorities to publish a clear construction timetable, disclose the contractor responsible for the project, and explain the procurement process, insisting that public infrastructure projects must be accompanied by public accountability.

He said residents had waited long enough for the bridge to be reconstructed and expressed the hope that the arrival of materials would translate into the timely completion of a safe and durable bridge rather than another unfulfilled promise.
