Tamale, June 15, GNA – Madam Sheila Adufutse, Country Director of Youth Challenge International (YCI) Ghana, has described young people as critical agents of change in the fight against climate change and called on them to play leading roles in climate action and environmental protection
She made the call during the celebration of this year’s World Environment Day in Tamale, organized by the Center for Opportunities in Rural Development (CORD Ghana) and partners under the theme: “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future”.
Speaking on the sidelines of the event to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Madam Adufutse said the increasing incidences of climate-related disasters in Ghana underscored the need for urgent and collective action to safeguard the environment.
She referenced recent floods reported across parts of the country, which had displaced people and destroyed property, and noted that the painful memories of the June 03 disaster continued to serve as a reminder of the consequences of environmental neglect.
She said “Nature is one of our greatest teachers. It shows us resilience, adaptation and growth. As we face climate challenges, we can draw inspiration from nature and work together to build a better future.”
Madam Adufutse explained that YCI, a Canadian organisation that had operated in Ghana for more than 17 years, remained committed to empowering young people to create sustainable solutions to social and environmental challenges in their communities.
She highlighted the organisation’s flagship HerStart programme, which provided training, mentorship and funding opportunities to young women entrepreneurs to establish businesses that addressed social and environmental issues.
She explained that youth empowerment and entrepreneurship remained key pathways to advancing climate resilience and sustainable development across the country.
