Vice President leads government delegation to honour late Nana Akuoko Sarpong

Agogo (A/R), June 5, GNA – The one-week observance of the late Agogomanhene, Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong, brought together leading figures from Ghana’s political divide, with the Government donating GH¢50,000 to the Agogo Traditional Council in support of preparations towards the final funeral rites of the revered traditional ruler. 

The donation was presented on behalf of the Government by Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, who joined hundreds of mourners and dignitaries at Agogo in the Asante Akyem North District, to pay their respects to the late Paramount Chief. 

The Vice President was accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, as well as party executives from across the region. 

The event also attracted prominent figures from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), underscoring the broad national appeal of the late traditional leader. 

The gathering further drew the presence of business magnates and several other notable personalities. 

Additional contributions came from State institutions, including the Forestry Commission, which donated GH¢50,000, the Council of State with GH¢20,000, and donations from the Speaker of Parliament and the Minister for the Interior, among others. 

Traditional authorities from across the country also attended the ceremony.  

Paramount Chiefs from Mampong, Kumawu, Tepa, Kwamang, Nsuta, Domeabra, Asumenya, Cape Coast and Akyem Swedru joined the observance, while a delegation from the Manhyia Palace represented. 

The ceremony transformed Agogo into a centre of national reflection, as political leaders, traditional authorities, security chiefs, religious groups and residents converged to celebrate the life and legacy of a chief widely credited with promoting unity, education and development. 

Nana Kwame Nti, Krontinhene of Agogo, speaking on behalf of the Agogo Traditional Council, expressed gratitude to all sympathisers and appealed for continued support towards the “Doteyie” and final funeral rites of the late chief. 

Residents who spokewith the Ghana News Agency described Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong as a visionary leader whose reign facilitated the establishment and growth of major educational and health institutions in the area, including the Presbyterian College of Education, Presbyterian Nursing and Midwifery Training College and the Presbyterian University. 

They noted that his openness to investors, missionaries and development partners helped transform Agogo into one of the leading educational and commercial centres in the Ashanti Region. 

The event was marked by traditional music performances, including kete, adowa and nwomkoro, while mourners clad in black and red filled the township in honour of a chief whose influence extended far beyond the boundaries of his traditional area.
