Tehran, Aug 27. (dpa/GNA) – Iran, on Wednesday, condemned the latest US sanctions threat in a letter to the United Nations, calling it an “act of state and economic terrorism.”
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, said in the letter, published on Telegram and by Iranian state media, that the United States was seeking to end Iran’s lawful economic relations with other countries, after failing to achieve its objectives through war.
The letter was addressed to UN Secretary General António Guterres, the UN Security Council and UN member states.
Washington has announced plans for new sanctions, aimed at economically isolating Iran, including measures targeting Tehran’s trading partners.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, said on Monday that anyone doing business with Iran, would feel the full force of US power, with the aim of cutting Tehran off from all sources of revenue.
Asked whether the measures would also apply to China, the main buyer of Iranian oil, Bessent said no one should test Washington’s resolve.
Araghchi said the sanctions were designed to harm civilians by restricting access to food, medicine, medical equipment, energy and other basic goods.
He called on the UN Security Council and member states to condemn and reject US “unilateral coercive measures and secondary sanctions,” urging countries not to implement them and Washington to stop pressuring third states to alter their trade relations with Iran.
China has already criticized the threatened sanctions, saying an economic war would not lead to a solution, but would instead worsen conflicts and disrupt the global financial order.
