Tehran, Aug 27. (dpa/GNA) – Another oil tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said, with the vessel hit by an “unknown projectile.”
The attack took place on Tuesday in the strait, between Iran and Oman, UKMTO said in a statement published early on Thursday. Unlike most previous reports, however, the agency did not initially provide a more precise location, leaving it unclear whether the tanker was hit off the coast of Oman or closer to Iran.
The crew was safe, UKMTO said. The attacker was not identified. On Monday, UKMTO also reported an attack on a tanker off the Omani coast.
Iran has continued to largely block traffic through the strait through threats and attacks on ships. The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for oil, gas and fertilizer exports from Gulf states, making disruptions there a concern for the global economy.
The strait has become a central flashpoint in the war between the United States and Iran. Before the war, the waterway was open to shipping.
