Pregnant women cautioned against unapproved medications

Tema, June 6, GNA — Pregnant women have been advised to avoid taking over-the-counter drugs, herbal preparations, and other medications without consulting qualified healthcare professionals.

Madam Anita Kwantrah, a Registered Nurse Assistant at the Okanra Medical Centre in Tema, cautioned that the use of unapproved or unprescribed medications during pregnancy could pose serious risks to both the mother and the baby.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), she explained that certain substances could interfere with the normal development of the foetus, especially during the first trimester when vital organs are formed.

She noted that the use of unverified medications could disrupt organ development and increase the risk of complications.

Madam Kwantrah further indicated that some medications, if improperly used, could reduce amniotic fluid levels, which are essential for protecting the baby and supporting healthy lung development.

She warned that some unregulated supplements, herbal preparations, and traditional remedies could also trigger uterine contractions or excessive bleeding, posing a threat to both mother and child.

She therefore urged pregnant women to seek medical attention whenever they experience any health concerns and to consult healthcare professionals before taking any medication.

Madam Kwantrah advised expectant mothers to adhere strictly to prescribed treatments and attend regular antenatal care visits to ensure safe pregnancies and healthy outcomes.
