Accra, June 7, GNA – Passion for Needy, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), on Saturday donated assorted items to the Akropong School for the Blind in the Eastern Region to help in their upkeep.
The items, estimated at GHS30,000, included 100 bags of rice, cooking oil, liquid soap, washing detergents, toilet rolls, mackerel, sugar, onions, loaves of bread, soft drinks, and bottled water.
Mrs Janet Torgbor El-Aschkar, Chairperson of Passion for Needy, said the donation was the organisation’s second to the school, following a similar gesture in 2010, and was intended to support the needs of the children.
She explained that the presentation also marked the posthumous birthday of Prophet T.B. Joshua, founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), whose birthday falls on June 12. The renowned televangelist passed away five years ago.
Prophet T.B. Joshua established Passion for Needy in 2009. Headquartered in Ghana, the organisation focuses on humanitarian outreach by providing support to street children, orphans, widows, the elderly, and other underprivileged groups.
Mrs El-Aschkar said the widow of the late prophet, Evelyn, had continued her husband’s humanitarian legacy through her commitment to supporting the less privileged.
“We owe a duty to our neighbours, including those begging by the roadside, at traffic lights, and in alleys, as well as the underprivileged in our society,” she said.
Mrs El-Aschkar noted that the organisation was also committed to supporting brilliant but needy students through educational assistance, while providing care for the elderly, widows, widowers, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
She said the donation was intended to complement government efforts in supporting institutions such as the Akropong School for the Blind and help ease some of their operational expenses.
Mrs Veronica Dery, Headmistress of the Akropong School for the Blind, expressed gratitude to the organisation for the donation and appealed to other institutions to extend similar support to the school.
“This is more than love,” she said.
Mrs Dery also commended the organisation for its patience and dedication, describing those qualities as essential for working in special schools.
“Without patience, you cannot work in special schools,” she added.
Since its establishment in 2009, Passion for Needy has supported several charitable institutions, including the Teshie and Nungua Children’s Home, Christ Faith Foster Home at Frafraha, YOA Foundation, and the Islamic Research Institute at Nima.
