Abesim (Bono), June 15, GNA – Mr Kingsley Kusi Appiah, New Patriotic Party (NPP) constituency secretary hopeful for Sunyani East, has called for a strong membership database at the constituency level to enhance the party’s electoral prospects ahead of the 2028 general election.
He said compiling a comprehensive database of party members would strengthen the NPP’s political organisation and improve its chances of returning to power in 2028.
Mr Appiah explained that, as the foundation of the party, constituency-level structures required accurate membership data to effectively plan and execute political campaigns that engage every member.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Abesim, near Sunyani, Mr Appiah, who is also the Assembly Member for the Ankobea Electoral Area in the Sunyani Municipality, said the party’s fortunes in the 2028 elections would depend on active grassroots mobilisation rather than rhetoric.
“As a party in the constituency, we must do more to identify our loyal members who are ready to help us regain the Sunyani East parliamentary seat and return our great party to political power,” he stated.
Mr Appiah said it was his vision to establish a welfare scheme to identify and address the needs of loyal party members.
“If the livelihoods of our members are not improved, they cannot go out there and effectively engage the masses during campaigns,” he said.
He stressed the importance of knowing the party’s membership strength and understanding the socio-economic circumstances of members to provide the necessary support.
“That is why, as a party, we must be able to estimate our membership base at the constituency level and know exactly what our members do for a living and support them,” he added.
Mr Appiah noted that although the NPP was often described as a party of elites, it remained problematic if it could not accurately account for its membership.
“In fact, we boast that we are a party of elites. However, if we are unable to estimate our membership data, then that is a problem,” he stated.
He cited poor human relations and the attitudes of some constituency executives as challenges that contributed to the party’s setbacks in the 2024 elections.
According to him, the unfriendly conduct of some party executives left many loyal members feeling sidelined and dissatisfied.
“Many of our loyal members are disgruntled because they believe they have been sidelined. But we need those members back if we are to win both the presidential and parliamentary elections in 2028,” he said.
Mr Appiah said he had taken the initiative to engage party members across the various electoral areas in the constituency as part of efforts to rebuild and strengthen the party.
“Reaching out to party members enables us to identify and address emerging challenges because we have realised that those challenges differ from one electoral area to another,” he indicated.
He also expressed concern about what he described as growing indiscipline within the party and called on the leadership to enforce the NPP constitution by taking disciplinary action against members and executives who breach its provisions.
