Ho (V/R), Sept. 11, GNA – The Ho Zonal Secretariat of the National Union of Tricycle Operators, Ghana (NUTOG), has directed riders to suspend, with immediate effect, implementation of the recently announced increases in tricycle (Mahama Can Do) fares.
The directive, contained in a statement signed by Mr Xefu Benjamin, Zonal Secretary, and Mr Goh Enyonam, Zonal Chairman, and copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said consultations and dialogue were still ongoing among relevant stakeholders on the proposed fare adjustment.
The Secretariat said the suspension was necessary to allow the parties to reach a fair and acceptable fare structure through proper consultation, mutual understanding and cooperation between riders and passengers.
It therefore appealed to all tricycle operators to exercise patience and refrain from charging the proposed new fares until discussions had been concluded and an agreed fare structure reached.
The Secretariat also urged passengers to appreciate the challenges confronting riders, including rising fuel prices, increasing costs of spare parts, vehicle maintenance and other operational expenses.
At the same time, it encouraged riders to consider the financial difficulties facing passengers and the general public, stressing the need to balance the sustainability of tricycle operations with fare affordability.
“Our goal is to bring out the best for both parties. We believe that through dialogue, understanding and compromise, we can arrive at a fare that is fair and sustainable for riders while remaining reasonable and affordable for passengers,” the statement said.
The NUTOG Ho Zonal Secretariat appealed to riders and passengers to remain calm, respectful and cooperative while consultations continued.
It reiterated that the proposed new fare should not be implemented until further notice and thanked riders and passengers for their patience, understanding and cooperation.
