Anaji (W/R), June 29, GNA – Mr Martins Wilde, the Country Representative of the Jakob-Christian-Adam Foundation, has called on Africa to harness its abundant sunshine for solar energy, describing it as a clean and environmentally friendly alternative.
He criticised building designs in Ghana, noting that many required air conditioners to be habitable, which increased energy consumption.
Mr Wilde said this at the commissioning of a solar system and equipment donated to the Holy Cross Technical Institute, (HCTI), at Anaji in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
The Foundation donated a complete solar installation kit comprising solar batteries, inverters, solar panels, charge controllers, helmets, sirens, climbers, wrenches, single-phase water pumps, screwdrivers, cordless drills and other power tools.
The Salesians of Don Bosco Installation Team installed the system at the Institute.
Mr. Wilde said the solar system would reduce energy costs and improve upon power reliability on campus.
The Foundation also trained two staff members in solar installation to ensure proper transfer of skills.
Reverend Bro. Jones A. Antwi, the Head of the Electrical Department at HCTI, expressed gratitude to the donor for the equipment and training.
He said the donation would equip students with practical, hands-on skills in renewable energy technology.
He added that the installation would enable students to meet current industry demands, contribute to sustainable development and become responsible stewards of the environment.
Rev. Bro. James Boachie-Yiadom, the Principal of HCTI said the project represented a bold step towards sustainability, resilience and practical learning.
He noted that the installation would serve as a “living laboratory” for students to study system design, maintenance, monitoring and real-world challenges in renewable energy.
Rev. Bro. Boachie-Yiadom reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to maintain the system, enrich the curriculum with it, and share lessons with the wider community.
Bro. John Badu Affum, the Principal Superior of the Province of West Africa Congregation of Holy Cross, thanked the Foundation and urged the Institute to put the system and equipment to good use through proper maintenance.
