Kpone, June 30, GNA – Mr Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA), has toured flood-affected communities in the municipality to assess the impact of Monday’s heavy rains and reassure residents of the Assembly’s commitment to reducing flood risks.
The tour took the MCE to communities where floodwaters inundated homes and disrupted movement following the downpour, which affected several parts of Accra and its environs.
Speaking during the tour, Mr Morton indicated that the extent of flooding would have been far worse if the Assembly had not undertaken dredging works in flood-prone areas prior to the onset of the rainy season.

He explained that drains at Bela Aqua, Kpone Barrier, Kpone Main Bridge, Bediako and adjoining communities had been dredged to ensure the free flow of stormwater and minimise flooding.
“The dredging exercise carried out by the Assembly significantly reduced the impact of the floods in these communities, and we will continue the exercise as soon as weather conditions permit,” he said.
Mr Morton identified indiscriminate waste disposal as one of the major causes of flooding and urged residents to desist from dumping refuse into drains.
He noted that blocked drains restricted the flow of water and increased the risk of flooding during heavy rains.
The MCE stressed that addressing flooding required collective action and called on residents to support the Assembly’s efforts by maintaining clean surroundings and protecting drainage systems.
He advised residents in low-lying areas to relocate temporarily to safer grounds in times of imminent flooding to safeguard lives and property.

Mr Morton assured affected residents that the Assembly would continue to implement measures to improve drainage infrastructure and strengthen flood prevention efforts across the municipality.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation in Kpone-Katamanso and technical officers of the Assembly accompanied the MCE on the assessment tour.
