Knowledge without skills in nursing is dangerous – GRNMA Secretary

Bolgatanga, June 5, GNA – Mr Francis Kwaku Wuni, the Upper East Regional Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has stressed that nurses must possess both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to deliver holistic healthcare.

He emphasized that professional nursing required a balance of both attributes and observed that a nurse who lacked practical skills poses a serious threat to patient safety.

“A clinical nurse full of knowledge without skills is like a loaded gun with bullets; it can kill,” he stated.

Mr Wuni, who serves as a clinical nurse specialist and Head of Research at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga, made these remarks in a fraternal message at the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College’s matriculation ceremony.

He further explained that a lack of clinical proficiency could lead to fatal consequences, “An attempt to perform a procedure where a nurse has the knowledge but lacks the practical skill can result in severe medical errors or even death,” he warned.

Addressing the newly matriculated students, Mr Wuni urged them to master the three pillars of nursing training: knowledge, skills, and attitude.

He insisted that character was particularly vital, saying, “Eighty-five percent of your success as nurses upon graduation will be based on your attitude.

“Strive to develop the right knowledge, skills, and attitude. These elements will determine your success or failure and will ultimately earn the trust of your patients,” the GRNMA Secretary added.

He encouraged the fresh trainees to remain resilient against the challenges of their academic journey and advised them not to let obstacles deter them from their professional goals.

“With the right attitude, knowledge, and skills, you will succeed and make a significant mark in the nursing profession and the wider healthcare sector,” he told the newly matriculated students.
