Accra, June 30, GNA — At least 12 people have been confirmed dead and seven others are still missing following devastating floods that swept through Greater Accra and other parts of the country on Monday, June 29.

Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, disclosed the figures to Parliament, in Accra, on Tuesday during an update on the disaster.

He said: “Mr. Speaker, as of this morning, seven persons are still missing… and 12 people are dead.

“I have been at the Finance Committee for the past three hours, and I do not know whether many more have been found, but as of this morning, it is still seven,” the Minister added.

According to the Minister, 7,761 households were impacted by the floods, with 3,882 people directly affected.

He said emergency agencies were still conducting search, rescue and recovery operations in the worst-hit areas.

The torrential rainfall has been described by authorities as one of the heaviest to hit Accra in recent years.

It inundated several communities including Alajo, Adabraka, Kwame Nkrumah Circle area, Kaneshie, Weija, Tse Addo, Ofankor, Pantang, Ashongman Estates and parts of the Tema Metropolis.

Homes and businesses were submerged, hundreds of motorists were stranded, and major roads were closed.

The floods also forced many families to flee their homes, disrupted transport services, damaged public infrastructure, and led to the suspension of lectures and postponement of examinations at some tertiary institutions.

Alhaji Mohammed-Mubarak extended the government’s condolences to bereaved families and assured Parliament that immediate humanitarian assistance were being deployed.

He said the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service and other agencies remained on the ground.

Their mandate includes rescue operations, damage assessment, and provision of relief to displaced residents.

“Mr. Speaker, government is coordinating interventions to support victims with emergency relief items while longer-term measures are being considered to mitigate the impact of recurring floods in the capital,” the Minister added.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid flood-prone areas, and comply with safety directives as recovery efforts continue.

Monday’s downpour caused extensive disruption to economic activities across Accra after several hours of intense rainfall.
