Accra, June 30, GNA – Guinea-Bissau has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire territory, including the Sahara region.
Ms Fatumata Jau, Guinea-Bissau’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Communities, made the statement on Monday in Rabat following talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita.
Speaking to the press after the meeting, Ms Jau reiterated her country’s firm backing for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue and expressed support for the autonomy initiative proposed by the Kingdom of Morocco.
She described the autonomy plan as the only credible and realistic solution to the dispute and reaffirmed Guinea-Bissau’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at achieving a lasting settlement.
Ms Jau also highlighted the significance of Guinea-Bissau’s decision to open a Consulate General in Dakhla in October 2020, saying the move reflected the strong bilateral relations and partnership between the two countries.
According to her, the establishment of the diplomatic mission forms part of the growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy plan and its sovereignty over the Sahara region.
The minister further welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that it supports efforts to achieve a political solution to the dispute based on realism, compromise and mutual agreement among the parties involved.
She reaffirmed Guinea-Bissau’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Morocco and supporting initiatives that promote peace, stability and development across the region.
