High Court remands Abronye over failure to deposit passport

Accra, June 4, GNA – An Accra High Court has remanded Mr Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC and Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), after he failed to comply with a court order to deposit his passport with the court registry.

The court had granted Mr Baffoe bail following his earlier remand by an Accra Circuit Court and ordered him to surrender his passport as part of the bail conditions.

Mr Baffoe subsequently applied for a review of the bail condition relating to the deposition of his passport, arguing through his lawyer, Mr Daniel Martey Addo, that the document was in the custody of the United Kingdom High Commission in Ghana.

Counsel presented a receipt from the High Commission acknowledging receipt of the passport and told the court that his client was expected to resume studies in the United Kingdom on June 14, 2026.

He urged the court to consider Mr Baffoe’s right to education.

However, the court dismissed the application, describing the applicant’s conduct as a disregard for its orders.

The court held that Mr Baffoe had failed to comply with the directive requiring him to deposit the passport with the registrar and that his explanation could not be accepted.

Mr Joshua Sackey, Principal State Attorney, opposed the application, arguing that the passport ought to have been deposited with the court as ordered.

He noted that the court granted bail on May 21, 2026, while records showed that the UK High Commission received the passport on May 25, 2026.

According to the prosecution, this indicated that Mr Baffoe had possession of the passport when bail was granted but failed to surrender it to the court.

“There is a clear intention not to abide by the orders of the court,” Mr Sackey argued, urging the court to dismiss the application.

He further submitted that the bail condition did not infringe on the applicant’s right to education, as he could seek the court’s permission to travel when necessary.

Mr Baffoe is facing charges of publication of false news and offensive conduct. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Circuit Court had earlier remanded him into the custody of the Bureau of National Investigations, after which he sought and obtained bail at the High Court.

The High Court has now ordered that he remained in custody until he produced the passport in compliance with its earlier directive.
