Health Ministry Advisor Calls for Peace to Safeguard Medical Outreach in Nkwanta South

By Kingsley Mamore

Dambai (O/R), June 19, GNA – Dr Williams Koku Awoonor, Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Health, has called for sustained peace and stability in the Nkwanta South Municipality to ensure the uninterrupted delivery of healthcare services and development interventions.

He disclosed that security concerns arising from the protracted conflict in parts of the municipality nearly affected the implementation of a recent medical outreach programme aimed at providing essential healthcare services to residents.

According to Dr Awoonor, the prevailing security situation continues to pose challenges for health professionals and development partners operating in the area, making peace a critical prerequisite for effective service delivery.

“Security considerations were among the issues we had to assess before proceeding with the outreach programme. However, considering the healthcare needs of the people, we took the necessary precautions and carried on with the exercise,” he told the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

Dr Awoonor, who served at the Nkwanta Clinic in 1990 and contributed to its eventual upgrade to a hospital, expressed concern that recurring disturbances could discourage specialists and other professionals from accepting postings or participating in outreach activities in the municipality.

He described Nkwanta as a municipality with significant development potential and noted that lasting peace would create an enabling environment for investment, improved healthcare delivery and socio-economic growth.

“Peace and stability are essential for development. When there is unrest, access to social services becomes difficult and the welfare of residents is adversely affected,” he said.

The Technical Advisor urged traditional authorities, opinion leaders, youth groups and other stakeholders to embrace dialogue and peaceful conflict-resolution mechanisms to restore calm in the area.

He stressed that a peaceful environment would enable government agencies, health institutions, and development partners to implement programmes effectively and improve the well-being of residents.

Dr Awoonor expressed optimism that through collective commitment and cooperation, Nkwanta South could overcome its challenges and continue a path of sustainable development.
