Techiman, (Bono East) August 11, GNA – Mr Richard Akari, a physically challenged person at the Techiman office of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) in the Bono East Region, has called for the enforcement of the Disability Act.
He appealed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to enforce the Act in ensuring that physical infrastructure projects were friendly to Persons with Disability (PwDs) for them to easily access social services.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Techiman, Mr Akari regretted that the PwDs were confronted with challenges in accessing public offices, toilets and washrooms because of their unfriendly nature.
The Persons with Disability (PwDs) Act 2006 (Act 715) protects the rights of the PwDs with sections six and seven pushing their rights to accessing public places and services.
Mr Richard Akari, who used a wheelchair, worried that he had to struggle before accessing some public facilities including public transport.
He said it was unfortunate that the Bono East Regional Coordinating Council offices as well as offices of the MMDAs were unfriendly to the PwDs depriving many of them access to those buildings.
Another PwD, Mr Kingsley Amankwah, a staff of the Techiman Metropolitan Assembly, told the GNA that: “accessing the Techiman Mayor’s office, which is on the fifth floor, is a nightmare for the PwDs.”
He emphasised that Act 715 ought to be strictly enforced.
