Accra, June 11, GNA – The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has marked its 40th anniversary with a staff-led renovation of the Republic Road Nursery School in Tema Community 4.
The initiative, undertaken as part of the Corporation’s anniversary activities, reflects GNPC’s broader focus on sustainable development, local participation, and educational support beyond its core mandate in the energy sector.
Over the years, GNPC has expanded its role through capacity-building programmes, local content development, and partnerships aimed at promoting national development.
The 40th anniversary celebrations featured a series of activities, including stakeholder engagements, local content seminars, the PELA STEM Quiz, and other social investment projects designed to leave a lasting impact.
The renovation of the kindergarten facility, however, stood out as a key highlight. Dubbed the “40-Forward” initiative, the project was driven entirely by GNPC employees, who voluntarily contributed their time, expertise, and resources to improve the school’s infrastructure.
Representing the Chief Executive Officer of GNPC, Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, the Director of Human Resources, Dr. Edward Appiah-Brafoh, said the project demonstrated the Corporation’s culture of service and collective responsibility.
“This project reflects the true spirit of volunteerism, ownership, and service that employees believe should define the Corporation’s 40-year legacy. It highlights the willingness of our staff to contribute beyond themselves for the benefit of society,” he said.
Madam Ebi Bright, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Tema, commended the initiative and expressed appreciation to GNPC staff for their contribution to community development.
She urged stakeholders to embrace the theme of the project, “leaving footprints in communities,” as a collective call to further support development efforts in the municipality.
The refurbished facility consists of a fully upgraded four-unit kindergarten classroom block, featuring new ceilings, tiled floors, and an attached washroom fitted with a water system to ensure reliable supply.
The project also incorporated child-friendly and educational design elements. The classroom walls are decorated with murals depicting petroleum production processes and workers, aimed at stimulating early interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
In addition, classroom furniture was produced using recycled plastic materials, promoting environmental sustainability among learners.
At the handover ceremony, the Municipal Director of Education, Madam Bernice Ofori, and the Headmistress of the school, Madam Mavis Adatsi Jessie, expressed gratitude for the intervention.
Madam Jessie called on both pupils and teachers to maintain the facility, stressing the importance of a strong culture of maintenance to sustain the investment.
The project is expected to provide a safer and more conducive learning environment for pupils of the school, while symbolising GNPC’s continued commitment to transforming resources into opportunities for community growth and development.
