Accra, June 17, GNA – The Ghana Education Service (GES) has condemned the assault on two teachers and the destruction of property by students of Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region.
The Service described the incident as unacceptable and said it undermined the principles of discipline, respect and integrity that guide the educational system.
This was contained in a statement issued and signed by Mr Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, on Wednesday.
The statement said reports received linked the attack to the strict enforcement of examination regulations and invigilation during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
“The actions of the alleged students are unacceptable, unjustifiable, and contrary to the core values of discipline, respect and integrity that underpinned education.
“Management views attacks on teachers in the course of their official duties as a serious breach of school discipline and a threat to the safety of staff of the service,” the statement said.
The GES said security personnel had been deployed to the school to maintain order and ensure the continuation of academic and examination activities.
The statement said security personnel had been “deployed to the school and normal academic and examination activities continue under enhanced protection arrangement.”
It said the affected teachers were receiving medical attention and support.
The statement said a full-scale investigation was underway in collaboration with security agencies to identify all persons involved in the incident.
It said that “those found culpable will face the full rigours of the law following GES disciplinary procedures.”
