Esiama (W/R), June 23, GNA – The Ghana Environmental Advocacy Group (GEAG) has petitioned the Attorney-General’s office to seek justice for the death of 13-year-old Pious Nkansah who was killed during confrontation between some youth and security officers at a mining concession in the Nzema-East Municipality in December 2025.
The petition, copied to the Inspector General of Police, the Minister for the Interior and other law enforcement agencies, and dubbed “Justice for Pious”, was signed by 722 concerned citizens from Ghana and the Diaspora.
Madam Elizabeth Allua Vaah, the Executive Director of the GEAG, who presented the petition on behalf of the others, to the office of the Attorney-General said they wanted a transparent, accountable, and immediate action regarding the killing of Pious Nkansah.
She said their demands followed the emergence of new evidence including; a police report identifying the officer alleged to have shot Pious, and a signed post-mortem report confirming the cause of death, including gunshot wounds and severe internal injuries.
She noted that despite these developments, the earlier decision of nolle prosequi had not been revisited, leaving the family without justice and the public without confidence in the process.
According to the Executive Director of the GEAG, the petitioners were requesting for a review and reversal of the nolle prosequi decision, reopening of criminal proceedings against the identified officer, an independent and transparent investigation, and protection and support for the family of the deceased.
Madam Vaah said: “We trust that your office will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it deserves, and we stand ready to support any lawful process that ensures justice, accountability, and closure for the family.”
Mr Eric Ogbamey Selby, a family member of the deceased, said now that the police and medical reports were available, the law enforcement agencies should intensify their investigations and expedite action on the killing of Pious Nkansah for justice to prevail.
He urged the government and traditional rulers to embark on community engagement with mining companies before mining activities started on their lands to avoid confrontations with the youth.
Madam Sarah Senya Cobbinnah, one of the lead petitioners, said she was motivated to be part of the delivery of the petition to the Attorney General’s office due to the wrongful death of an innocent young boy and the injustice faced by the affected community.
She said as an advocate for environmental sustainability and social justice, she felt a moral responsibility to act rather than remain silent.
“I volunteered to lead the petition to seek accountability to ensure the family is compensated for losing a bright future,” she added.
It would be recalled that on December 13, 2025, there was a shooting incident at a mining company site at Adelekezo near Dadwen in the Axim District of the Western Region which led to the death of 13-year-old pious Nkansah, alias Nkrumah and the destruction of several company properties.
