French police imposes curfew in Paris effective Wednesday night – Order

Moscow, Oct 20 (RIA Novosti/GNA) – The French police prefecture has imposed a curfew in Paris from 11 p.m. (21:00 GMT) on October until 6 a.m. (04:00 GMT) on October 21, according to an order published on Tuesday.

“From 11 p.m. on October 20, 2026, until 6 a.m. on October 21, 2026, the movement of people in the locations specified by this order is prohibited,” the document read.

The curfew will be in effect in the Place de la Republique, although the restrictions will apply only to the square itself, not to the shops and other establishments located there. Furthermore, the order extends to the area around the Quartier des Halles in central Paris, and the restrictions will also affect several streets to the south of it.

The authorities had already imposed a curfew in Paris this month. It was in effect during those same hours on Sunday night. Similar measures were also taken in other cities across the country.

Mass demonstrations over the rising cost of living and falling education standards escalated into clashes with police in France on Saturday. In the city of Limoges, rioters set fire to the historic city hall building. Administrative buildings in Marseille and other cities were also attacked. Looters ransacked shops, smashed storefronts and made off with merchandise, including items from luxury brand boutiques, particularly in Paris and Marseille.

More than 2,000 people were detained on Sunday. The Interior Ministry estimates that a total of 550,000 people took part in the demonstrations, including 110,000 in Paris.
