Obuasi (Ash), Oct. 20, GNA – AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has launched a partnership with Project C.U.R.E., an international non-governmental organisation, to improve healthcare delivery in its host communities through the provision of medical equipment and supplies.
The initiative forms part of the Mine’s 10-year Socio-Economic Development Plan (SEDP), which seeks to promote community well-being through sustainable investments in critical sectors, including healthcare.
Mr Edmund Oduro Agyei, Director of Sustainability Management at AGA Obuasi Mine, said the partnership would provide 10 cargo containers of medical equipment and supplies valued at about US$3.5 million to address identified needs in selected health facilities.
He said two shipments had already arrived, with equipment presented to the Bryant Mission Hospital and the Obuasi Government Hospital at the launch ceremony.
Mr Agyei said the partnership would also support capacity-building programmes for healthcare professionals and periodic free medical screening exercises, particularly in women’s health, including obstetrics and gynaecology.
Dr Rebecca Weber, Project C.U.R.E. Lead, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to improving access to quality healthcare in underserved communities.
She said the organisation was ready to continue collaborating with the Mine to address healthcare needs and strengthen service delivery.
The launch followed four days of community health outreach activities organised with support from the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, Obuasi Municipal Assembly, Obuasi East Municipal Assembly and the AGA Health Foundation.
The outreach programmes provided breast cancer education and screening, general outpatient services, dental care, eye screening and blood glucose testing for residents of Jimiso and Ntonsua.
A specialised screening exercise was also organised for persons with disabilities at Wawase.
The programme climaxed at Kunka, where the partnership was officially launched, and medical equipment presented to the beneficiary health facilities.
The Ashanti Regional Health Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to supporting AGA Obuasi Mine and its partners in efforts to improve healthcare delivery across the region.
The partnership is expected to strengthen health facilities, enhance the capacity of healthcare professionals and expand access to essential medical services in the Mine’s host communities.
