Aflao (V/R), June 29, GNA — Deputy Commissioner of Immigration (DCOI) Mark Asamoah Boakye, Aflao Sector Commander, says border communities in the municipality are increasingly recognising the need to support efforts to safeguard Ghana’s frontiers.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), DCOI Boakye attributed the improved understanding to sustained engagements with key groups, including the Zongo community, traditional leaders, transport unions, youth groups, and commercial motorbike (Okada) riders.
He said members of the Zongo community, particularly Islamic leaders, now better understand the security and socio-economic consequences of harbouring irregular migrants.
“They now appreciate that supporting such individuals places a burden on the community, and they have taken steps to discourage it. Some even report suspicious persons to us for immediate action,” he said.
The Sector Commander noted that earlier misconceptions that Immigration operations targeted specific religious groups, particularly Muslims, had been addressed through dialogue and continuous engagement.
“Previously, there were allegations that the Service was targeting Muslims, but they now understand that this was never the case. Our work is purely to protect the country and ensure security for all,” he explained.
DCOI Boakye said the improved relationship had reduced cases where migrants sought shelter and support from mosques and community leaders.
He also commended Okada riders and transport unions for helping to identify and refer suspected irregular migrants to Immigration officers.
“Initially, some riders would transport such persons without questioning, but now many voluntarily bring them to us when they suspect something is wrong,” he added.
He said the growing cooperation had strengthened border security, enhanced peace within the municipality, and reduced public criticism of Immigration operations as awareness increased.
DCOI Boakye urged residents to sustain the collaboration, stressing that effective border security was a shared responsibility.
He assured the public that the Service remained committed to protecting lives and property while maintaining cordial relations with all stakeholders.
