Ho, June 15 GNA – Blood donation is one of the simplest yet most impactful acts of kindness that any individual can offer.
Because every unit of blood donated provides hope and a second chance to patients facing medical emergencies.
Mr Samuel Yao Atidzah, Executive Director of GOSANET Foundation Sunday stated this in a release to mark World Blood Donation Day.
The Day which is celebrated on June 14, every year was instituted by the World Health Organization to celebrate voluntary, unpaid donors and raise global awareness about the critical need for safer blood and blood products.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”
Mr Atidzah said women experiencing complications during childbirth, accident victims, children with severe anaemia and individuals undergoing life-saving surgeries and treatments also relied heavily on blood.
He noted that the theme for the day served as a powerful reminder that blood donation was not only an act of kindness but also a life-saving act.
The Executive Director on behalf of the Foundation expressed their deepest appreciation to all voluntary blood donors across the Volta region and Ghana for their selfless commitment to humanity.
“Your contributions continue to strengthen our healthcare system and ensure that blood is available when it is needed most,” he stated.
Mr Atidzah noted that despite significant progress, Ghana continued to face challenges in maintaining an adequate and sustainable blood supply.
He said demand for safe blood supply remained high and hospitals frequently required emergency donations to support critical medical interventions.
Mr Atidzah said this underscored the urgent need for more eligible individuals, especially young people, institutions, faith-based organizations and community groups to embrace regular voluntary blood donations.
“Let us make blood donation a regular habit,” he appealed.
He stated that the single act of blood donation could save up to three lives and contribute significantly to reducing preventable deaths in our communities.
The Executive Director intimated that as an organization, the Foundation was committed to improving public health outcomes, we encouraged stakeholders, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, civil society organizations, development partners and the media to intensify public education on the importance of blood donation and support blood donor recruitment and retention.
He stated that together they could build a stronger and more resilient healthcare system where no life was lost due to unavailability of safe blood.
“As we observe this important day, let us remember that every drop counts, every donor matters and every donation brings hope to someone in need,” he noted.
