Accra, June 17, GNA -The National Democratic Congress Majority Caucus in Parliament has dismissed allegations that its members received special travel privileges to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling the claims misleading and a potential source of unnecessary tension in the House.
The controversy began after the New Patriotic Party Minority side alleged that Majority Members of Parliament (MPs) were “each allocated two travel slots for the tournament, while their constituencies received three slots.”
The Minority suggested this had created an uneven and preferential distribution of World Cup opportunities.
However, the Majority Caucus has strongly refuted the claims, insisting that no such allocation was made to MPs or their constituencies.
Addressing the matter on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday, Mr Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, Majority Chief Whip, denied the allegations and clarified the government’s position.
“Mr. Speaker; nobody was given two slots. The government announced that they were not sponsoring anybody apart from the established national supporters’ union to the World Cup.
“MPs have not been given slots and so when you sit here and say those things, you are aggravating disorder in the House,” he added.
“How do you stand on the Floor of Parliament and be insinuating that slots were given but we kept them for ourselves?” Mr Dafeamekpor asked.
The Majority Caucus emphasised that government was not financing or allocating travel slots to individual MPs for the World Cup, urging members to avoid statements that could inflame tensions in the House as the tournament progresses.
