US to help vessels trapped by Hormuz blockade, Trump says

Washington, May 4, (dpa/GNA) – The United States will launch an initiative on Monday, to help vessels stranded by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, US President Donald Trump said, adding that countries around the world had asked for assistance.

Writing on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, Trump said Washington had informed those countries it would guide their ships safely out of blocked waterways “so that they can freely and ably get on with their business.”

“Again, these are Ships from areas of the World that are not in any way involved with that which is currently taking place in the Middle East,” he added.

“This process, Project Freedom, will begin Monday morning, Middle East time,” Trump said, without providing details on how the US would carry it out.

The US president said his representatives were having “very positive discussions” with Iran and added that these talks could lead to something “very positive for all,” without elaborating.

The United States has long pressed Tehran in negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments, but with little success so far. Shipping through the narrow waterway remains heavily restricted.

At the same time, the US has imposed a naval blockade on Iran, further escalating tensions in the region.
