Accra, May 26, GNA-Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, has underscored the need for African countries to strengthen grassroots sports development systems to produce elite athletes capable of competing on the global stage.
According to him, investing in structured youth development programs, modern sporting facilities and talent identification initiatives remained crucial to building a sustainable future for sports across the continent.
He made this call whiles speaking at the Basketball Africa League Investor Summit in Kigali, held alongside the BAL playoffs and finals, which brought together prominent stakeholders to discuss the growth and commercial potential of basketball in Africa.
“If we want to produce elite athletes, we must build a strong foundation. Ghana has established structures like the Grassroots Sports Secretariat and the School Sports Organization to nurture young talent from an early age,” he noted.
He said building strong foundations would aid in accelerating the growth and development of sports across the continent.
The Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency noted that Africa must position itself as a production hub for sports talent and not merely a market for athletes.
He said the continent must break down travel barriers, noting that free movement among nations would also contribute to boost sports growth, talent development and economic opportunities.
The Sports Minister also called for the strengthening of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) frameworks to attract private sector investments.
“A clear and well-defined PPP structure is essential, so investors know the proper channels to follow,” he added.
The summit was attended by Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Ministers from various countries, NBA executives, and both current and former basketball stars.
