Panama backs Moroccan Sahara autonomy plan, supports UN Resolution 2797

Accra, May 24, GNA – The Republic of Panama has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan as the only viable solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, under the Kingdom’s sovereignty, while also backing United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.

The position was conveyed on Friday in Rabat by Panama’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Carlos Arturo Hoyos Boyd, during a working visit to Morocco.

He made the remarks after holding talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita.

Mr Hoyos Boyd stated that Panama considers Morocco’s autonomy initiative as “the only serious, credible and realistic basis” for a lasting solution to the regional dispute.

He emphasised that the proposal, presented by Morocco in 2007, aligns with ongoing efforts under the auspices of the United Nations and respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom.

The Vice Minister further noted that Panama’s embassy in Morocco exercises its full consular mandate across the entire Moroccan territory, including the southern provinces.

Reaffirming his country’s stance, Mr Hoyos Boyd said Panama remains committed to supporting the autonomy proposal as reflected in UN Security Council Resolution 2797.

He also expressed Panama’s backing for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to facilitate negotiations among parties involved.

According to him, these efforts, based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal, are aimed at achieving a “just, lasting and mutually acceptable” solution to the dispute.

The Moroccan Sahara issue has remained a subject of international diplomatic engagement, with growing support from several countries for Morocco’s autonomy plan as a path toward resolution.
