Sunyani, (Bono), May 10, GNA-The Ultimate Women Foundation (UWF), women-centered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) says the annual Mother’s Day celebration ought to go beyond gift-giving, cards sharing and family gatherings.
UWF works to empower indigenous women to know their worth by identifying and tackling challenges inimical to their holistic growth and to enable them to contribute meaningfully towards building a better society for all.
As Ghana joins the rest of the world to mark the 2026 celebration of the Day, Dr Freda Prempeh, a former legislator and the Founder of the UWF urged the nation to identify and highlight the fascinating stories behind inspiring role models and female figures.
Observed annually on the second Sunday of May in Ghana, the nation celebrates Mother’s Day to honour the dedication, care and sacrifices of mothers in the lives of individuals, families and communities and this year’s celebration falls on May 10.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Dr Prempeh, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North and a former Minister of State, said besides strengthening maternal bonds, “Ghana also must identify and honour strong and influential mothers”.
Nonetheless, she said as sons and daughters honoured their mothers, it was also imperative for them to also appreciate nans, aunties, sisters, step-mums, teachers and caregivers.
This is basically because in a typical Ghanaian society ensuring the proper upbringing and holistic development of children remains shared responsibility, but not only the nuclear family, Dr Prempeh explained.
The former outspoken MP commended all mothers and women in general for their immeasurable and priceless contributions towards shaping a better society, as the nation observed Mother’s Day.
