Elmina (C/R), Sept 04, GNA – The Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Municipal Assembly (KEEA) on Friday presented a total of GHC267,518.00 to 94 persons with physical challenges (PPCs).
The move was part of the Assembly’s third-quarter support package aimed at improving livelihoods, education and care for vulnerable residents across the municipality.
The beneficiaries included 26 persons living with a range of challenges, many of them women and children who suffer predominantly from hearing and visual impairments and various mental disorders.
Of the total number assisted, 50 beneficiaries received GHC3,000 each, to start or expand income-generating ventures and 30 others were given educational support ranging from GHC1,500 to GHC3,000 to assist pupils and students from Basic to Tertiary Levels.
Eight caregivers received GHC4,000 each to support intensive caregiving responsibilities and six individuals received between GHC400 and GHC10,000 to meet pressing health-related needs.
Mr Ismail Zagoon-Saeed, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the Assembly’s social-support drive was commendable and urged traditional authorities, community leaders and families to protect and include persons with disabilities in development plans.
“This payment is part of our deliberate effort to reach the most vulnerable and ensure they have the means to live with dignity,” the MCE said at the presentation.
“We will continue to prioritise social intervention, monitor how funds are used and provide complementary support where necessary,” the MCE noted.
Mr Samuel Atta-Mills, the Member of Parliament for the area who chaired the programme, described the disbursement as a demonstration of the Government’s commitment to social inclusion.
He pledged to embark on a community-by-community tour to brief constituents on parliamentary activities and to bring their feedback back to government.
“I will travel across the Municipality to explain what is happening in Parliament and to gather your views, so they are reflected in national decisions,” the MP said.
He added: “I call on everyone to support the Assembly and my office so we can deliver on our mandate and implement a shared vision for development in KEEA.”
The disbursement was supervised by Mr Ntiamoah Gyampoh, Municipal Social Welfare and Community Development Officer as several beneficiaries with disabilities expressed gratitude, saying it would improve their independence and ability to participate in daily activities.
They also reported increased access to education and community events and called on authorities to sustain support and extend similar assistance to other persons with disabilities.
