Banu (UWR), May 01, GNA – Mawums Construction Limited says is it has completed about 33.07 per cent of the work on the Tumu–Sissili-Navrongo Road project under the government’s Big Push initiative.

The construction firm disclosed this during the second joint site meeting held with the Ghana Highways Authority at Tumu, where officials inspected ongoing works along the Banu to Kunchokor stretch to Tumu where sections of the road had already received the first bitumen layer.

Mr William Adongo, the Project Manager of Mawums Construction Limited, said the current level of completion shows a significant improvement from 13.76 per cent recorded during the previous inspection in February 2026.

He explained that major works undertaken so far included earthworks involving the placement of natural gravel for sub-base, laying of mechanised stabilised base, application of primer seal, concrete works, road surfacing, and markings, as well as the construction of bridges over Bachilehu and Navaribie.

According to him, the team had successfully scarified and reshaped 22 kilometres of the road, laid 15 kilometres of sub-base, and completed nine kilometres of primer seal.

He said despite the progress, water shortage along the project corridor continue to slow down work saying, “Even after six boreholes were drilled to support construction activities, we still have problems with water.”

Mr Adamu Yakubu, the Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive, expressed concern over the delayed completion and safety of the two bridges before the rainy season would begin in June.

On his part, the Upper West Regional Acting Director of the Ghana Highways Authority, Mr Livistone Damali, urged the contractor to prioritise the installation of road signs, particularly near schools and health facilities.

He also called for collaboration with local authorities to restore gravel pits used for construction.

He assured residents of Tumu that damaged water pipelines were being reconnected with the help of Community Water and Sanitation.

Mr Mohammed Issah Bataklia, the Sissala East Member of Parliament, commended the contractor for the quality of work after touring the project site with engineers from the Highways Authority.

He appealed to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to extend the dualisation of the Tumu township road to the customs border post to ensure easier vehicular traffic with heavy goods, and to preserve the lifespan of the roads.

The Tumu-Chuchuliga-Navrongo road project included the construction of a 36-metre reinforced concrete bridge over the Kanyibie River and a 24-metre bridge over the Bechelihu stretch.

When completed, the project is expected to improve connectivity and reduce travel time between the Upper East Region and the Upper West Region.
