Kpone-Katamanso NCCE intensifies sensitisation against illegal sales of fuel

Kpone, May 27, GNA – The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has embarked on a municipality-wide sensitisation campaign against the illegal sale of fuel on tables and at roadsides and its associated dangers.

The exercise, which was carried out across various communities within the municipality, was aimed at educating illegal fuel vendors and the public on the risks posed by the illegal trade, including fire outbreaks, explosions, environmental pollution and threat to public safety.

Mr Seth Sotie, Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Director of the NCCE, stated that the sensitisation exercise was not intended to punish traders but rather to protect lives and promote public safety within the municipality.

He urged residents to support efforts aimed at preventing fire disasters and maintaining law and order.

Mr Sotie further hinted that the NCCE would continue to engage community leaders, market associations, and residents to collaborate with the relevant authorities to discourage the unsafe handling and sale of petroleum products in residential and commercial areas within the municipality.

He reaffirmed the NCCE’s commitment to continuous public education on issues affecting national development, safety, and responsible citizenship with a call on stakeholders to ensure the campaign was rolled out successfully.

The NCCE Director warned that the illegal sale of fuel was becoming widespread in the municipality, adding that many women were engaged in the illegal trade as a source of livelihood, a situation he said the commission would not overlook but rather caution the individuals involved in the trade to desist or face possible prosecutions.

“The growing practice poses serious danger to lives and properties,” he said.

The vendors were strongly advised to stop the illegal activity immediately and comply with the safety regulations.

They were given a two-week ultimatum to cease operations, the failure of which would possibly trigger the invitation of the security agencies.
