Tema, May 13, GNA – Ms Azara Amadu, President of the Ghana Grid Company Ladies Association (GRIDLASS), has called for deliberate measures to increase the appointment of women into leadership and decision-making positions.
Ms Amadu praised the contributions of women across the company and stressed the need for a more balanced and inclusive leadership structure.
According to her, many women continued to balance demanding professional responsibilities with family obligations while still contributing significantly to job success.
She disclosed that out of GRIDCO’s total staff strength of 854 employees, only 140 are women, representing just 16 per cent of the workforce, explaining that the figures reveal a sharp decline when employees move into higher ranks within the organisation.
Ms Amadu noted that there was only one woman at the board level among nine members, although she currently serves as the board chairperson and is the first woman to occupy that position in the history of the company.
She described the presence of the female board chairperson as a symbol of hope and proof that women could excel when given the opportunity.
She said at the management level, only three out of fifteen members were women, while at the middle management level, just six women occupy positions out of 38 managers.
The GRIDLASS president urged the company to move beyond the current 16 per cent representation through targeted recruitment, leadership training, professional certification programmes and strategic project assignments that would prepare women for higher responsibilities.
She said female staff members have contributed to GRIDCO’s growth through professionalism, integrity, and teamwork; however, she expressed concern over the low representation of women within the company, particularly in leadership positions.
She commended the board, management, and staff of GRIDCO for their dedication during the recent Akosombo fire incident, which affected power supply operations.
