Accra, May 02, GNA -The Ghana Tuna Association (GTA) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable tuna fishing, calling for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to safeguard Ghana’s tuna resources.
In a statement issued to mark World Tuna Day, observed annually on May 2, the GTA highlighted the critical role of tuna in food security, employment, export earnings, and the livelihoods of coastal communities.
It noted that the tuna industry remained a key pillar of Ghana’s fisheries sector, contributing significantly to national development and strengthening the country’s position in the global seafood market.
It emphasised that the long-term sustainability of the industry depended on responsible fishing practices, effective regulation, and coordinated action among government officials, regulators, industry players, and international partners.
The GTA also highlighted progress made in advancing sustainability, particularly the achievement of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for Ghana’s Atlantic Ocean skipjack and yellowfin tuna fisheries.
According to the association, the certification reflects Ghana’s commitment to meeting internationally recognised standards for sustainable fisheries management and responsible harvesting.
It, however, cautioned that sustaining these standards would require continuous effort and strengthened enforcement mechanisms.
The association identified challenges such as illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, rising operational costs, and gaps in monitoring systems as key threats to the sector.
It called for enhanced collaboration among stakeholders to address these issues and improve compliance within the industry.
The GTA reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote sustainability, strengthen regulation, and enhance the competitiveness of Ghana’s tuna industry in the global market.
The statement urged all stakeholders to work collectively to protect tuna resources for present and future generations.
