African laboratory professionals complete JICA-NMIMR specialised training

Accra, July 5, GNA – Eight laboratory professionals from six African countries have successfully completed an eight-week JICA-NMIMR Third Country Training Course on Enhancing Lab Skills for Infectious Diseases.  

The professionals, drawn from Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Togo and Zambia, were trained in Parasitology, Virology and Bacteriology at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), Legon to improve their infectious disease treatment skills on the African continent. 

A release from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said this year’s training course was structured into two phases: an online phase, which took place from April 20 to May 15, and an in-person phase from June 1 to June 26, 2026.  

It noted that since its inception, a total of 80 professionals had participated in the training across the continent, contributing to strengthened regional capacity in disease surveillance, diagnostics, and research. 

“The successful conclusion of this year’s training underscores the longstanding partnership between JICA and NMIMR and the shared vision of advancing global health through knowledge exchange and collaboration,” the release said.
