Accra, May 4, GNA – Ghana Athletics (GA) has said it will address concerns raised by members of the national men’s 4×100 metres relay team over late travel arrangements before the World Athletics Relays in Botswana.
The quartet secured qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing after finishing second in the second-round qualifiers at the just ended World Athletics Relays.
However, following their qualification, Benjamin Azamati and Saminu Abdul Rasheed voiced frustration over travel plans arranged by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, citing fatigue and inadequate recovery time.
“The Ministry of Sports in Ghana needs to do better. Don’t set us up for failure. If it were the Black Stars, flight tickets would be ready month before their game,” Saminu wrote on social media.
He added that a 14-hour flight with a 16-hour layover was unacceptable for professional athletes.
Azamati also took to social media, saying: “We’re competing against athletes who have been here for one to three weeks. I guess we’re magicians. Sports Ministry, do better.”
In response, Ghana Athletics acknowledged the concerns and accepted responsibility for the issues raised by the athletes.
“The Association has taken note of concerns raised by the athletes regarding travel and pre-competition arrangements. Ghana Athletics takes full responsibility for these concerns and recognises the importance of proper preparation conditions for elite performance,” GA said in a statement. “
The Association assured that it would work closely with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to address the challenges and put in place improved systems to prevent a recurrence.
