Ghana assures no citizen will be left behind in South Africa evacuation

‎Accra, May 22, GNA – No Ghanaian wishing to return home from South Africa will be left behind in the government’s evacuation exercise, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has assured.

‎The assurance follows the case of Mr Sylvester Boakye, a Ghanaian who reportedly missed an updated evacuation notice and appeared at O.R. Tambo International Airport expecting to be evacuated.

‎Mr Ablakwa said Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Mr Benjamin Quarshie, had since located Mr Boakye and assured him of inclusion in the planned evacuation, which is expected to cover about 800 nationals.

‎He dismissed reports claiming Mr Boakye was the only Ghanaian evacuated to Ghana on a chartered flight, describing them as false.

‎The Minister explained that no chartered flight had yet been dispatched due to an agreement with South African authorities to defer evacuation pending resolution of legal, technical and logistical matters.

‎He said the meeting between the High Commissioner and Mr Boakye at Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Pretoria further exposed the false reports.
