Four killed in Ukrainian attack on Russian city of Ryazan

Moscow, May 15, (dpa/GNA) – At least four people were killed and nearly 30 injured in the Russian city of Ryazan, in a Ukrainian drone attack, according to local authorities cited by TASS news agency on Friday.

Two blocks of flats and an industrial facility were damaged, said Pavel Malkov, governor of the region south-east of Moscow, said.

Telegram channels reported that the industrial facility was the Ryazan refinery, which industry sources said was Russia’s third largest. A large fire was observed there.

The Defence Ministry in Moscow reported an unusually large Ukrainian drone attack on many Russian regions overnight. It said 355 hostile flying objects were shot down. The figures cannot be verified in detail.

The Ukrainian military said two Russian navy vessels in the Caspian Sea were damaged in the attack, with a Be-200 amphibious aircraft and a helicopter at the Russian base in Yeysk on the Sea of Azov also struck.

The attack followed one of the longest and heaviest Russian airstrikes on Ukraine on Wednesday and Thursday.

In Kiev alone, 24 bodies were recovered from a destroyed block of flats, the emergency services said on Friday morning. A day of mourning was declared for the capital. President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered the military to plan retaliation for the attack.

Ukraine has been defending itself against an all-out Russian invasion for more than four years.
