Accra, May 4, GNA – The Ghana National Fire Service has commended firefighters for their bravery and called for public support and protection of personnel and equipment.

The Service also condemned attacks on firefighters and destruction of fire engines, describing such acts as threats to public safety and emergency response.

In a statement issued to the Ghana News Agency to mark the 2026 International Firefighters’ Day, Mrs Daniella Mawusi Ntow-Sapong, Chief Fire Officer, praised personnel for their dedication.

“Your dedication to duty, often under dangerous and challenging conditions, continues to inspire the nation,” she said.

The statement lauded firefighters for their “valour, commitment, compassion, and sacrifices” in safeguarding lives, property and the environment.

It paid tribute to personnel who had lost their lives in line of duty.

“We remember our fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” it noted.

The Service assured injured personnel of continued support towards their recovery.

It urged firefighters to remain professional, disciplined, and steadfast in the discharge of their duties.

The Chief Fire Officer called on the public to cooperate with the Service, stressing that community support was essential for effective emergency response.

“Attacking firefighters or damaging fire engines delays emergency response and can lead to loss of lives and property. We strongly urge all persons to desist from such acts,” it cautioned.

The statement described firefighters as key partners in national development and safety and called for respect and support for their work.

It encouraged the public to observe fire safety practices and promptly report outbreaks to minimise damage.

This year’s celebration is on the theme: “An attack on firefighters and equipment is an attack on public safety: End assaults and protect the firefighter.”

The Chief Fire Officer urged the public to reflect on the theme and commit to protecting firefighters.
