Berekum, (Bono Region), May 26, GNA-The chiefs and people of Amomaso and Benkasa farming communities in the Berekum West District of the Bono region have vowed to resist any mining activity, either illegal or legal.

They cautioned prospective community mining companies and illegal miners to rescind their decisions to mine in those communities or face their wrath.

Addressing a joint news conference at Berekum, Mathew Oluman an opinion leader at Amomaso and spokesperson said that the community members had had information about a mining company planning to commence operations in the communities on Monday June 1, 2026.

“But we want to inform them that there isn’t any way we are going to allow them to operate on our lands. We will never allow any excavator or mining equipment to operate and waste our limited agriculture lands”, he stated.

He said a mining company had already mounted billboards and began operations in the communities, though the traditional authorities were unaware about their licenses and concessions.

“Our lands are too small to accommodate any form of mining”, he stated.

Nana Konadu Mmuro II, the Chief of Benkasa, said that Benkasa was a predominantly agricultural community with the community members depending largely on farming for their sustenance and livelihood.

He said: “Our arable farmlands can’t host any mining activity” and called for the government intervention.

Nana Mmuro II expressed worry that the community watch groups were now discouraged because any moment illegal miners were arrested, they were set free impeding their efforts to stem illegal mining in the communities.
