Akatsi (VR), May 22, GNA – The Akatsi Police have intercepted another 1,183 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at Deti in the Volta Region.
Sources available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the suspected substance was seized following a tip-off to the Police at Akatsi on Thursday, at about 2100 hours.
The sources said the driver who is currently at large, upon detecting that the Police were chasing him, allegedly abandoned and hid the Ford vehicle with registration number VR 38-26 at Deti, a suburb of Akatsi in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region.
The compressed dried leaves, together with the vehicle, have since been conveyed to the Akatsi Police Station pending further action.
However, the police are yet to issue an official statement on the latest development.
The latest interception comes days after the Akatsi Police intercepted a Renault Trafic mini cargo vehicle loaded with 732 pallets of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at Adeheta while heading towards Akatsi.
Sources alleged that the suspect attempted to bribe the officers with an undisclosed amount of cash during the interception, while the vehicle was impounded for further action.
Some residents, who spoke to the GNA, commended the officers for their bravery and professionalism in combating the illicit drug trade in the area.
They appealed to the Inspector-General of Police and the appropriate authorities to motivate the officers and ensure justice is served.
